Portable tool boxes ... click here for my recommended source for
more info, more pictures, applications and pricing!
You've got that new truck and now is the
time to think about a portable toolbox. So many tool boxes ... so
little time. Diamond plate truck tool boxes are the most popular
and come in such a variety of sizes and qualities. But they're not
very portable. For about $200 you can go to your local Home Depot or
Lowes and get a Husky truck tool box. They of course are built with
cost in mind rather than quality so be careful. Most of the time
these boxes have lower quality latching mechanisms and thinner
skin. An insinuated "single wall" lid is common to keep costs
down. So don't stand on it!
| Next step up in this
category are the boxes ranging in price from $250-300. Delta
tool boxes for pickup truck beds are a very popular brand in
toolboxes Black powder coat boxes are great for their
long lasting good looks. You can spend some time making a
decision on which Delta truck tool box to get. Full size truck
tool boxes as well as the stepsides, midsize and minis ... Delta
will have it. Their Pro series line cost more but may be worth
it. They have the plastic truck toolboxes also. I'm not
impressed with the soft polyethylene because in the heat they
tend to get real "soft" and if you have anything heavy inside
... you might have trouble locking it. The "structured foam"
are rigid and don't have any "sag" issues. Futuristic look too!

OK ... you've just
spent 20-30 grand on your new Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Toyota or Nissan
and you want a great box. Weatherguard and Creative Industries are
my recommendations but they're not very portable.
Weatherguard tool boxes have been around jobsites for decades. You
usually don't let your Weatherguard go with the truck when you trade
it because they don ever wear out! Heavy gauge diamond plate skin
and latches that are tried and true. The one problem with a bright
diamond plate box is oxidation. Then tend to get a little dull over
the years. The black powder coat is very popular and limits the
oxidation damage but Weatherguard powder coats their bright boxes
with a clear powder coat which limits the dulling effects of the
sun.
The Creative Industries is the most
"unique". Heavy gauge metal and a lock mechanism like no other. It
locks along the entire front rather than at two points. The very
low profile design lets you see out the back. This is very helpful
when you are trying to "hook up". Creative Industries require no
drilling to install. The clamp on mounting systems are popular with
truck owners who don't want any holes in the bed. Creative
Industries was a small "Mom and Pop" company when they got started
but they had such a great product that they have grown to be one of
the leaders in the industry.
Let's not forget the "special use"
category. The "Swing box" would be something to check into.
Mounted to the end of your bed on a heavy duty "swing" frame you
have access to your entire bed as well as close up access to all
your stuff.
